Efficient KNX components for integrated KNX systems

KNX is increasingly becoming the worldwide standard in home and building automation. With KNX products from Theben, you can control indoor climate, lighting and blinds, among other things, automatically and highly efficiently – in functional and commercial buildings and in private homes. KNX systems transform a building into a Smart Home or Smart Building. Whether presence detector, actuator, weather station, actuator or CO2 sensor: KNX components ensure that energy can be used more efficiently and that people’s living comfort can be improved. KNX also builds bridges, for example into the world of DALI lighting control.

Theben iON KNX button and room controller – looks great, works great for KNX building applications

Theben is one of the leading manufacturers of KNX solutions for intelligent building technology. The product range includes KNX actuators and binary inputs, KNX presence and motion detectors, KNX sensors and the KNX-based LUXORliving smart home system. Wireless KNX components, such as KNX flush-mounted RF actuators are also available.

What are the advantages of Theben iON KNX tactile sensors?

The new Theben iON KNX tactile sensors are an excellent alternative to the binary inputs available at the moment. The stylish design can be conveniently combined with any switch range and offer you even more choice in terms of design and functionality. And by the way, the KNX buttons support secure communication through KNX Data Secure.

Theben iON KNX tactile sensors and room controllers with integrated temperature sensor allow various functions in KNX installations to be triggered at the push of a button. For example:

  • Switching lights on/off and dimming lights
  • Adjusting lighting colours and calling up lighting scenarios
  • Raising and lowering blinds
  • Initiating and saving user-specific scenarios
  • Operating central or group functions

Theben iON KNX tactile sensors are available in various versions: as 1-way (2 buttons), 2-way (4 buttons) and as a room controller with LCD display and Bluetooth interface. Depending on the device, up to 20 functions can be controlled with a single button. iON KNX tactile sensors stand out from the crowd thanks to their extensive functionality and exceptional ease of use. The iON 108 KNX room controller with LCD and integrated room thermostat features a Bluetooth interface to make it easier to use. All tactile sensors come with an integrated bus coupler and are programmed without an ETS app.

What Theben iON KNX buttons, with temperature sensor, are available?

Theben iON tactile sensors with integrated temperature sensor and bus coupler offer enormous possibilities for intelligent building control. With their clean design, the frameless iON KNX buttons are in harmony with the current switch ranges.

  • Theben iON 102 KNX 1-way tactile sensorwith two operating points. Switch light and dim light, control blinds, initiate and save scenes, measure temperature, manage colours, show status (multicolour LEDs)
  • Theben iON 104 KNX 2-way tactile sensor with four operating points. Switch light and dim light, control blinds, initiate and save scenes, measure temperature, manage colours, show status (multicolour LEDs)
  • Theben iON 108 KNX room controller with 20 functions, LC display, app operation and two operating points. Switch light and dim light, control blinds, initiate and save scenes, control temperature, manage colours, show status (LC display), Bluetooth interface for using the app via smartphone or tablet

Note: Theben iON KNX buttons are also available in versions for the LUXORliving smart home system with a smaller range of functions.

Product design by ID AID, Stuttgart

Configuration is carried out with the free LUXORplug application and operation via the LUXORplay app.

KNX push-button sensors in black, white and silver

In addition to the conventional white (traffic white, RAL 9016, glossy), iON push-button sensors and room controllers are now also available in variants with a black (RAL 9005, matt) and silver surface (RAL 9006, silver metallic). Theben is thus fulfilling the wishes of many customers for attractive colour variants for individual room design.

How are iON KNX tactile sensors mounted and installed?

The KNX buttons are mounted on standard device wall boxes by using the supplied mounting plate. Combinations of two iON KNX tactile sensors are possible with a 2-way mounting plate available as an accessory. The integrated bus coupler makes installation and connection to the bus system quick and easy.

What is important when selecting KNX buttons?

There is a great variety of KNX buttons from different manufacturers. Theben iON KNX tactile sensors are available as 1-way and 2-way KNX tactile sensor and as a KNX room controller with LCD. This allows countless KNX functions in the house to be controlled from a central point if desired. Pay attention to the following functions when selecting the appropriate KNX tactile sensor:

  • Integrated temperature sensor (iON 102 KNX, iON 104 KNX)
A KNX tactile sensor with temperature sensor allows the room temperature to be controlled in conjunction with suitable heating actuators.
  • LED status display (iON 102 KNX, iON 104 KNX)
Coloured status LEDs indicate the current status of the KNX tactile sensor. This allows the status of the external light to be displayed indoors, for example. If desired, the brightness of the status LEDs adjusts itself depending on the surrounding brightness. If the room gets darker, the status LEDs are dimmed automatically, preventing disruptive light interference at night. During the day, the LEDs shine more brightly. This makes them easy to identify in bright ambient light.
  • LC display (iON 108 KNX)
With the iON 108 KNX room controller, a suitable icon can be selected from a library for each of the 20 functions. The icon is supplemented by individual function names (for example “ceiling spots” or “terrace blinds”) and the current status (on/off/dimming value/position). This makes the room controller easier to use and navigate. The brightness of the LCD display adjusts itself depending on the surrounding brightness. If the room is dark, the backlight on the display is dimmed, preventing disruptive lighting effects. During the day, the display shines more brightly. So it is easy to read when there is lots of ambient light. Why an LC display instead of a 4K retina display? Very simple: High-end retina displays are brilliant, but not suitable for 24-hour use. For this purpose, LC displays are much more reliable and durable.
  • App operation with pairing via Bluetooth (iON 108 KNX)
Theben iON 108 KNX room controllers can be controlled via Bluetooth using an app. You connect the smartphone or tablet to the button via the integrated Bluetooth module. Access to the secure local network or the Internet is no longer necessary. The duration of pairing can be set individually. Manage up to 30 iON KNX room controllers via app. Visualise and control the 20 functions of the iON 108 KNX in the app. The app control of the iON 108 KNX room controller is ideal for living rooms, meeting rooms or hotels. The guest simply controls the functions of the room himself, from the comfort of his bed. Important: When used in a hotel, the pairing is automatically terminated after an adjustable period.

Which is more suitable: “KNX tactile sensors” or “buttons and switches with a KNX button interface”?

Basically, any conventional button or switch can be integrated into a KNX installation via a KNX button interface. The button interface is mounted in the wall box behind the switch or button. Then it is connected to the KNX bus line and the switch or button. Configuration is carried out via ETS. KNX tactile sensors, such as the Theben iON KNX, typically have a much greater range of functions. From the integrated temperature sensor via the LED status display or an LC display to operation via app, a suitable solution is available for every requirement.
